Have you ever wondered how it all got started? According to some sources, the purpose of the first ziplines (which were at the time simply cables and pulleys threaded between two points) was to transport both people and supplies across mountains, rivers, and canyons in the 18th century in remote areas of China. A few decades ago, U.S. students found ziplines useful in their explorations of the Costa Rica rainforest canopy. In the 1970s, these graduate students would strap on harnesses used for rock climbing to a belay line in order to easily climb a tree. Of course the techniques have improved vastly over the years, but essentially the ziplining adventures we enjoy today began out of necessity in transportation, and to help scientists in their explorations of the jungle.
Ziplining really took off in the mid 90s, as tourists in Costa Rica realized how much fun it was to zip through the air above the trees. Today, this popular activity is well-known not only in Kauai, but around the world! It’s a fun, exciting, and challenging way to spend part of your day when in Kauai – and an amazing way to experience the true beauty that surrounds us.
