Plenty of families and friends who travel to the Garden Isle include one of our Kauai zipline tours when vacationing on the island; after all, it’s one of the most exciting adventures you will find here! If it’s your first (or even second, third, etc.) time to visit our lush tropical paradise, you probably have a few questions. We’ll try our best to answer them below!
What types of accommodations are available? Nearly every type you could think of, from bed and breakfasts, cottages, and hotels to vacation rentals, homes/condos and luxury resorts. Where you stay depends on your preference, number of people in your party, budget and other factors.
How does the time differ from the mainland? Hawaii Standard Time is observed in Hawaii, which means we are two hours behind Pacific Standard Time and five hours behind Eastern Standard Time. So if it’s 5 p.m. in Tallahassee, FL, it’s 12 p.m. in Hawaii.
How long does it take to get from the Lihue Airport to other locations on the island? If you’re headed to Waimea Canyon it’s about an hour and 15 minutes, while it’s only 15 minutes to Wailua. The Kalalau Lookout is a little over an hour and a half away, while Koloa is 25 minutes from Lihue and Poipu 30 minutes.
Will you need to rent a car to tool around the island? You’ll probably want to because of the freedom you have to head out to all of those places you want to go when you want to go. That said, you’ll find taxis, shuttles, tour buses and public transportation to take you around if you prefer.
What type of money is used in Hawaii? You won’t need traveler’s checks as the U.S. dollar is the currency used throughout the state. ATM machines are easy to find, and credit cards are accepted by most merchants in Kauai.
How much should you tip? Just like in other U.S. states, the recommended amount to tip is 15 to 20% at restaurants, a couple of dollars each night for housekeeping, and a minimum of $1 per travel bag for porters.
Will you have access to Wi-Fi? Of course! Most hotels have wi-fi, which is available all over the island.
When is the best time to vacation in Kauai? There really is no “best” time, as the weather is beautiful all year long with temperatures averaging between about 70 degrees and 84 degrees Fahrenheit. If whale-watching is on your bucket list, you’ll want to visit from January through April.
