Most people who plan a Kauai vacation worry whether it will hurt their budget or be more expensive than they thought. The fact is, there are lots of fun things you can do at little or no cost when you visit “the Garden Isle.” While our Kauai zipline tours aren’t free, they’re something you’ll definitely want to consider if you’re the active type who enjoys an adrenalin rush and excitement. If this sounds like you and you don’t have a huge budget, you can save in other areas so that a zipline adventure is the highlight of your trip!
It doesn’t cost a thing to explore the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” otherwise known as Waimea Canyon. Ten miles long, over 3,500 feet deep and a mile wide, the views from many of the lookouts are simply spectacular. You will also want to consider an excursion to the Kalalau Lookout for amazing photo opportunities and maybe a picnic lunch following your sightseeing adventure atop the Koke’e State Park crater.
If you’re interested in Hawaii’s history, you’ll want to pay a visit to the home of the “People’s Prince” in Prince Kuhio Park, named for the last royal heir to the Hawaii throne, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. Other historical sites include the Alekoko Fishpond in the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge, and Lydgate State Park near the mouth of the Wailua River, a place of refuge for those who had broken a “taboo” or kapu.
Hawaii’s culture can usually be enjoyed at little or no cost, whether you want to learn more about dance (hula), native language, music or other aspects of Hawaiian culture. From learning how to make leis to enjoying local music and dance, there are all kinds of events and ceremonies you will love – some free, and others at minimal cost.
Lihue is where our Kauai zipline tours are located, where you’ll find something that may look familiar, depending on your age. The gorgeous Wailua Falls were a fixture in the Fantasy Island television show opening credits in the 1970s, and the 80-foot waterfalls are more captivating today than ever.
Of course there are endless white sand beaches for your enjoyment whether you want to surf, paddle board, lay in the sun, or just enjoy the shade and the sights while you picnic.
