While it’s rare, the fact is, people have suffered injuries on zip lines. Most of these accidents have involved homemade or “backyard” ziplines, or commercial zipline facilities that fail to adhere to safety rules, regular inspections, etc. At Just Live! our Kauai zipline tours are extremely safe; in fact, we’ve never had an accident as the safety of our guests is our top priority.
How can you make sure riding a zipline is a fun, safe activity for yourself or your family?
First of all, only ride ziplines where there are highly trained guides throughout the process. Ziplining is not something you just “jump on” and do, and you need direction.
Make sure the facility at which you intend to take a zipline tour operates under the standards set forth by the ACCT (Association for Challenge Course Technology). In addition, leaders should be trained and certified in first aid, CPR, zipline operations, and all other operations of the course.
If you’re not certain, ask questions. How often are the components of the zipline inspected, and is the safety gear inspected as well? Cables, pulleys, and other parts associated with a zipline can corrode, wear, crack, or become damaged over time. This is why frequent inspections are essential! Never be afraid to ask questions, and if you don’t feel comfortable with the answers you get, don’t ride.
Be sure to wear safety gear including a harness, gloves, and a helmet. You’ll also want to avoid loose or “baggy” clothing that could get caught in any components of the zipline.
For the most part, platforms for launching/landing and canopy bridges should have some type of railing system to prevent falling or tripping from the bridge/platform.
Even though trained guides give explicit instruction, parents should always keep a close eye on their children and make sure they follow instructions.
We don’t condone riding backyard ziplines, simply because there have been so many accidents. However, when you choose a trusted facility, such as Just Live!, who goes beyond the required safety standards and regulations, you can rest assured you’ll have a blast and not have to worry about safety issues. Come enjoy one of our three zipline tour adventures in Kauai!
