If you’ve always dreamed of vacationing in Kauai, it’s really affordable no matter what your budget when you know how to save. Of course there are some areas where you’ll want to splurge, such as our Kauai zipline tours. What’s great is that you don’t have to sacrifice a great time to save money. We’ve got some tips below we think you’ll enjoy if you want to enjoy a wonderful vacation without breaking the bank.
Consider buying groceries for many of your meals. If you’re staying in a villa, condo or other accommodation that has a kitchen you’ll want to prepare some of your meals to save on eating out two or three times a day. In fact, food is one of the largest expenses when you vacation, so try not to eat every meal out. You can usually grab some great food on one of the food trucks for less than many restaurants. Additionally, you can usually eat cheaper in Lihue or Kapaa than you would in Hanalei or Poipu, a popular tourist town.
Vacationing in September or October could save you money. While there isn’t really what you would call an “off season” in Kauai, there are months where there are fewer tourists and you may be able to find discounts on activities, dining, car rental and other things.
Renting a car is the most affordable way to explore the island.
If you intend to enjoy a few “adult beverages” (and who wouldn’t when vacationing in a tropical paradise) you may want to buy your own alcohol and mix your own drinks rather than buying fancy tropical drinks at the restaurants and bars. You’ll save a bundle by doing this one simple thing.
Pack some snacks to bring along. From nuts and chips to popcorn, pretzels or granola bars, it’s good to have some snacks for when you’re a little munchy.
What to bring along so you don’t have to spend even more. Maybe you’re passionate about snorkeling or love hiking. Whatever you plan to do in Kauai, it makes “cents” to bring along your own equipment such as fins and a mask for snorkeling, a hiking stick, reusable water bottles, even rain gear as it does rain frequently in Hawaii. Also be sure to bring along some water shoes, flip flops, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and other necessities so you won’t end up having to spend a small fortune on these items once you arrive.
You can have a blast without blowing your budget; you just need to decide where you want to save, and what you want to splurge on. For the most excitement and fun you’ll find in Kauai, be sure to take one of our zipline tours!
