Whether you’re vacationing in Kauai with family or friends, someone may have suggested an exciting zipline tour. Yes, it’s exhilarating and fun, but if you fear heights it may terrify you just to think about it. The truth is, being afraid of heights is quite common and nothing at all to be ashamed of! So is there any way you can join in the excitement and experience this thrilling adventure? It all depends.
Our Kauai zipline adventures are based in the treetops, and about 80 or so feet off the ground. The height of various ziplines vary around the world; some are closer to the ground, while others may be 150 feet high. Ours aren’t so high that it’s dizzying, but if you’re absolutely terrified you may want to stay back and watch the others in your group. That said, if you really wish you could overcome your fear and join in the fun, you may be able to conquer those nerves and anxiety!
In the weeks before you go on vacation, consider trying out other activities that involve some height to gradually help yourself get accustomed to it, such as rock climbing at the gym. Mountain climbing might be a good idea as well, as you gradually ascend higher and can turn around if it gets to be too much.
Think about why you’re so afraid. It’s often helpful to name why you have a fear of heights; it helps you see that you’re actually in control, and may help you conquer it. Many people have discussed their fears with an instructor at the zipline facility, who can offer some helpful advice to alleviate some of your fear and get you on your way.
Never feel pressured to do anything you’re really uncomfortable with. Hopefully these suggestions will help you move forward and enjoy ziplining in Kauai with your family or friends, but if they don’t you’ll have a great time watching them and hearing their stories! Hawaii is a great place to vacation even if your feet never leave the ground.
